GRAN works on rural development and natural resource issues. Its objective is to enable small farmers living in mountainous regions to make a living on their farms and to halt land degradation with the use of organic farming.

GRAN collaborates with farmer associations around the Dominican Republic and has previously also cooperated with certain towns in Haiti. GRAN functions as a service agency within four main areas, the so-called four pillars:

- Providing advice and training for farmers.

- Issuing loans and advances for exports.

- Organic certification.

- Marketing and export of mainly organic coffee

The Working Group for Rural Development, the AFL, the SOFIA supported the work with SIDA grants and expertise since its inception in 1989 until and including 2007. GRAN’s activities have since continued without Swedish aid.
